A blend of the old and new West, Cheyenne has a cultural diversity and variety unlike most communities. By mixing tradition with innovation, the community offers something for every taste and every budget. Cheyenne has built a strong community with a volunteer spirit and a helping hand for anyone in need.

From its inception in 1867, Cheyenne has always been a railroad and military town, but it is also a center for business, education and government. As Wyoming's capital city, Cheyenne is home to large contingents of state, federal and local government and a large private service sector based on the government economy. One of every three employees in Cheyenne works for government.

Cheyenne's largest employer is F.E. Warren Air Force Base, with about 4,200 military and civilian employees. Federal government has over 3,000 non-military employees in Cheyenne, and state government has nearly as many. Laramie County School District Number 1 and United Medical Center are also major employers.

Union Pacific Railroad remains the largest private employer with about 800 employees. Other large private employers include refineries, hotels, nursing homes, discount retail stores, banks, mail-order companies, light industrial, telecommunications, and a credit card servicing firm, with smaller businesses making up a growing retail and service sector.

While appreciating the stability of its government-based economy, Cheyenne's business community is actively working to diversify the economy and expand the economic base. The recent addition of several high-profile national businesses and industries is being hailed as a positive step toward that goal.

The city is well known for the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days celebration, which combines the world's largest outdoor rodeo with the a variety of music acts including the latest country music stars. The event features four parades, three pancake breakfasts and historic entertainment like the old-fashioned melodrama and gunslingers.

Western culture and history can be found throughout the year at numerous museums.

Cheyenne is not all cowboy hats and spurs. The city hosts many performing artists from near and far, including popular singers, dancers and touring productions. It is home to the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, a professional symphony that is regarded as one of the best in the nation for a community this size. Other groups, such as the Cheyenne Little Theatre Players and a host of talented high school artists, help provide the community with a variety of cultural activities that continues through the year.

Cheyenne History

On July 4,1867 the first tents were pitched on the site now known as Cheyenne. Cheyenne means "aliens" or "people of foreign language". The Sioux Indians gave this name to the Indian tribe "Dzitsistes", who roamed the open plains. Their spelling was Shyenne. The first residents were men who moved west to work on the Union Pacific Railroad. The majority of settlers moved away when the railroad was completed in November of that same year. Those who stayed joined others who came to form this new thriving western town. By 1869 Cheyenne was home to a variety of residents, including railroad gangs, soldiers from Fort D.A. Russell (which is now F.E. Warren Air Force Base), and employees From Camp Carlin, a supply camp for all the northern posts on the Indian frontier.

This mostly rough population gave entrance to the type of entertainment that became associated with the "Wild West". Cheyenne was a lively place with five "variety" theaters in operation simultaneously. Every other building was a saloon. The shows had regular stages and gave what was called "burlesque" performances with plenty of female performers.

Cheyenne did not remain a rowdy town for long, as the railroad that initiated Cheyenne's beginnings continued to play a major role in its development. The Union Pacific, one of the most heavily traversed railroads, passed through Cheyenne bringing some of the best shows of the times. After the opera house was erected in 1882, performers such as Lily Langtry and Emma Nevada and their troupes stopped in Cheyenne on their way to San Francisco.

The railroad also provided direct access to the East, thereby enabling Cheyenne to receive the latest styles in furniture, the most recently published magazines and newspapers, and the most fashionable apparel from eastern salons. The cultural ideals of the East were virtually transplanted to Cheyenne via the railroad. By 1875 the population had grown to almost five thousand. Residents enjoyed a social life which was unique for the West and on a par with many cities of a similar size in the East. In fact, Cheyenne's culture far surpassed many of the eastern cities.

The cattle industry was another influencing factor in Cheyenne's development. Purebred Hereford cattle were raised at the famous Wyoming Hereford Ranch (near Cheyenne) as early as 1880. The town attracted many wealthy men from the East and Europe, bringing with them their impeccable social amenities. Many were graduates of the most outstanding universities in England and America. Many cattle barons spent their summers in Cheyenne, wintering in Europe. It was during this time that the world famous "Cheyenne Club" was established. It's membership included many of these men. The club was lavishly furnished like a club of its scale in England. It had a wide verandah, large dining room, billiards room, card rooms, reading room, and a lounge on the main floor. The former Cheyenne Club stood on the site that later housed the Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, located on east 17th street

Medicine Bow National Forest
Just west of Cheyenne, the Medicine Bow National Forest offers a variety of recreational opportunities and natural attractions, including the Vedauwoo Recreation Area and the Snowy Range Ski Area. (307) 745-2300.

Snowy Range Ski Area
Located about 80 miles west of Cheyenne. Downhill and cross-country skiing; snowmobiling in the winter. Summer hiking and scenic drives. (307)745-2300.

Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site
Features a restored 19th-century prison, rotating exhibits, a country church, ranch, re-created frontier town, special events and a dinner theater. The 1872 Wyoming Territorial Prison is the only prison in which outlaw Butch Cassidy was incarcerated. The Horse Barn Dinner Theatre features summer theater and a chuckwagon style meal. In Laramie, 45 miles west of Cheyenne, at 975 Snowy Range Rd. off I-80. (307) 745-6161.

Fort Laramie National Historic Site
Located 80 miles north of Cheyenne. Fort Laramie was built in 1834 as a fur trading post. The military acquired it in 1849 and used it as a post from 1849 to 1890 to guard the wagons along the various trails that went through the area. Open year round. (307) 837-2221.

Oregon Trail Ruts & Register Cliff/Guernsey, Wyoming
Ruts carved into sandstone by wagon trains heading west along the Oregon Trail are located west of Gurnsey, and 80 miles North of Cheyenne. Register Cliffs was a resting point along the Oregon Trail where travelers stopped for the night and carved their names in the sandstone cliffs. Self-guided tours of both sites. (307) 777-6323.

Curt Gowdy State Park
Located 26 miles west of Cheyenne along Highway 210. Excellent for camping, boating, hiking and fishing. (307) 632-7946.

Vedauwoo Recreation Area
Known for spectacular granite rock formations. The Vedauwoo Recreation Area is located in the Medicine Bow National Forest, about 25 miles West of Cheyenne. Sightsee, hike, mountainbike, or picnic in these awesome rocks. (307) 745-2300.

Ames Monument
Ames Monument is a truely unique state historic site west of Cheyenne, about 25 miles. The monument is a 60 foot pyramid built in 1883 as a monument to Oliver and Oakes Ames, who were instrumental in the construction of the first transcontinental railroad. (307) 777-6323 or (307) 632-7946.
